  16. <p>Body Heat. Dark and supple and unpredictable, like the femme
  17. fatale at its core. Body Heat establishes Lawrence Kasdan as
  18. an awesomely assured writer-director, and William Hurt as
  19. American's hunkiest loser.
  20. </p>
  21. <p>Chariots of Fire. The year's handsomest period piece is about
  22. athletes running for Olympic gold--and to save their souls.
  23. Writer Colin Welland and Director Hugh Hudson manage to inspire
  24. without being cloying, and mark an honorable return to the
  25. British tradition of quality.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>Cutter's Way. (Original title: Cutter and Bone.) A murder
  28. mystery set on the downslope of the California dream,
  29. flavorsomely written by Jeffrey Alan Fiskin, directed by Ivan
  30. Passer and acted by Jeff Bridges and John Heard.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>Excalibur. Or: "Camelot Goes to Woodstock." Writer-Director
  33. John Boorman recasts the Arthurian legends as a fable for our
  34. time and all time, with the most voluptuous evocation of
  35. pastoral imagery since Days of Heaven.

  37. <p>The Last Metro. Paris show people retain their grace under
  38. pressure of the German Occupation. Director Francois Truffaut
  39. is at his best, too, in this suspenseful romance.
  40. </p>
  41. <p>Man of Marble. The life of a Polish Everyman--Stalinist hero
  42. turned Stanlinist victim--is examined in Andrzej Wajda's
  43. intricate, ironic study of humanity distorted by
  44. totalitarianism. The irony has become yet more bitter; Wajda,
  45. head of the Polish filmmakers' union, is now reported under
  46. arrest.
  47. </p>
  48. <p>On Golden Pond. Henry Fonda rages at the dying light and, with
  49. his hard brilliance, illuminates a twilight romance, while
  50. bringing his own career to a golden climax.
  51. </p>
  52. <p>Prince of the City. A corrupt New York cop (Treat Williams)
  53. further corrupts himself as he tries to expiate his crimes.
  54. Sidney Lumet has directed a fiercely acted and harrowing descent
  55. into paranoia's hellish center.
  56. </p>
  57. <p>Raiders of the Lost Ark. George (Empire) Lucas + Steven (Close
  58. Encounters) Spielberg + Lawrence (Body Heat) Kasdan + Harrison
  59. (Star Wars) Ford = intelligent, thrilling blockbuster. Moves
  60. like a Rolls-Royce over bad road.

  62. <p>Reds. Could have been "Warren's Gate." Instead, Writer-
  63. Director-Producer-Star Beatty fashioned a biography of
  64. Radical Journalist John Reed into a love story that evokes
  65. laughter, tears, thoughtfulness, astonishment.
